Trellis Gardening
Out of space in your garden but still have itchy green thumbs? Think vertical! By adding climbing flower varieties, you will create new dimensions and focal points. This method only requires minimal space, vine supports and your imagination to produce a lush explosion of eye-high color.
Be creative with your trellis choices. A simple pole or wooden tripod will provide excellent support and can be topped off with a birdhouse or wooden finial. An arch or arbor can be fashioned by shaping or braiding slender cut saplings. Perhaps the most fun of all comes from employing architectural elements which allow you to easily vary the height of your ascending plants. Porch columns or old lamps posts give you high choices while wrought iron gates and railings give you options for lower plantings. Even some
furnishings such as a scrolled iron headboard or wire chair back may be used. Whatever your choice, do not let the vines engulf your trellis. More visual interest results from the interplay of vegetation and its structure.
Have fun! The sky really is the limit in vertical gardening! |
